"Playing host to the largest of Corsica's 16th-century Genoese watchtowers, Camp Moro is a charming fishing village renowned for its crescent-shaped sandy bay."
Along the coast road west of Propriano and several kilometres beyond the picturesque hamlet of Belvedere, an enticing panorama comes into view: a sweep of sand lapped by clear turquoise water and backed by a jumble of old fishermen's cottages, ending in a medieval watch-tower: Campo Moro.
It takes 20 minutes to walk the lovely beach from end to end at a gentle pace and at both ends is a little gathering of stone-built cottages. Part of this paradise has been turned into a coastal nature reserve. There are half a dozen cafe-bars and restaurants and a couple of shops, although when Campo Moro is at its most peaceful, in spring and autumn, they are not all open. Naturally the pace livens up considerably in July and August when families are attracted by the fine sand and gentle slope of the beach, so wonderful for small children.
Campo Moro is an ideal base from which to explore. About an hour's drive away is Filitosa, the fascinating megalithic site. Propriano, the main coastal town of the region, is under 30 minutes by car and is the prime destination from Campo Moro for shopping and people-watching. Naturally, one of the specialities of Propriano's many restaurants is fresh fish, caught either by one of the harbour's small fishing fleet, or by one of Campo Moro's fishermen.
The beautiful valleys of the Rizzanese and Baracci rivers just inland from Propriano offer craggy peaks, hot springs, gorges, rock pools and vineyards. And then of course, there is Sartene, a truly Corsican hilltop town famous for vendettas, superstition and the Catenacciu, the Good Friday procession, whose path you can trace by wandering the mysterious medieval alleyways. And finally, a day in the extraordinary cliff-top citadel of Bonifacio, or among the jagged peaks of Bavella, is definitely not to be missed.
