Guide to Piana

The pink roofs of Piana, one of the 'Plus Beaux Villages de France', seem to float ethereally on a mirror of blue out of whose mysterious depths soar rosy mountains. Six winding kilometres below Piana is a small sandy cove and a little further is the lovely sandy beach of Arone. Both Cargese and Porto are about half an hour away by car and the hinterland of the Gulf is a walker's paradise.

After Piana, the road begins to twist and spiral through the fantastic landscape of the Calanques, where the coral-coloured granite has been twisted, spun, hollowed, fissured and moulded into crazy pinnacles, jagged crenellations and weird and wonderful, unearthly forms which can scarcely be thought to be made of hard and lifeless stone. Always in the distance hangs the incredible backdrop of pink cliffs plunging into a sheer blue sea.
