One of several hilltop villages in the lush region of Balagne, it looks out across a gentle valley of olive groves, citrus orchards and age-old forests. And in the misty morning, the wonderful scents of honeysuckle, lavender and chestnuts fragrance the air.

You won't find much here in the way of attractions, just a small general store and a bar. But that's exactly why those in the know come here. You'll find excellent restaurants in the nearby town of Spelucanto. Why not hire a bike and work up an appetite with an early evening cycle here and then enjoy a slap up meal washed down by a glass of Clos Landry, a famous local wine.

If you want to fill your days up follow the 'Strada di l'Artigiani' route, which will lead you round dozens of villages noted for centuries of local craftsmanship like basket weaving and woodwork. Kill the car's engine and stop off to walk through the pine and oak woods in the Forest of Tartagine and listen to birds calling to one another. Take your swimsuit, too. You can cool off in rock pools and streams of pure water with just the fish for company.

Then visit a working farm and buy some chestnut honey or olive oil. And if you're a hiker, you're truly spoilt. To really work your legs, pick up part of the GR20 route that snakes along through Corsica's north mountain peaks here, some pierce the sky at 9000 feet. It's breathtakingly beautiful.

Or perhaps you want to stretch out on some sunburnt sands? The coastal town of Ile Rousse is 15 kilometres away, beyond the 6-hole golf course of Regino, or head for the wonderfully unspoilt Lozari Beach is the same distance. However you spend your days here, you'll be relaxed and refreshed in next to no time.
