You've filled your MP3 player with holiday tracks. Grabbed the latest Jackie Collins. Popped on your shades. Now all you need is a quiet spot on a beach. Preferably to yourself. Preferably with plenty of sunshine. Well, in Kalathos you'll get just that.
Part traditional village, part small resort, Kalathos is just the ticket for a relaxed break, away from the usual hustle and bustle. It's just a 10 minute stroll from Paralia Kalathou, a sand and pebble beach dotted with beach brollies that stretches into the distance for four kilometres. Even on the Greek National Holiday – 15th August – when the locals pack out many of the other beaches, you'll still find a spot to yourself here. And what with Rhodes' 300 sunny days a year, it's a great place to start or top up your suntan. Clientele-wise, Kalathos tends to attract adults and couples. The sea is warm and clean but drops away sharply a few feet from the water's edge and so you don't really find many young families here.
As to the location, Kalathos is tucked halfway down the east coast road, bringing many of the island's famous historic sights within easy reach. Regular buses run from Kalathos go to Lindos, just 10 minutes away. Here you can visit the ancient Temple of Athena and the old fortifications built by the Knights of St John. Rhodes Town is about an hour's bus ride and is well worth the effort. Its well preserved Medieval citadel is an absolute 'must see'. Sights aside, when it comes to nights out, Kalathos is fairly chilled. In keeping with the low-key feel of the place, eating out and entertainment revolve around the tavernas along the beach and the bars, cafes and restaurants in the village. Usually owned by a larger-than-life Greek, they offer warm hospitality along with great meze dishes. Nearby Lindos, however, offers more in the way of a pumped up night out.

The closest beach to the resort centre is a mix of sand and shingle, but the beach at Vlicha is sandier. If you don't mind the crowds, Lindos has a busy sandy beach, but some of the most beautiful beaches on Rhodes - Agathi, Stegna and Tsambika are just a few kilometres to the north.
Although Kalathos lacks a large choice of restaurants, Lindos has an excellent selection, many of which have roof-top views out to sea.
Kalathos has a selection of bars, mainly in hotels. There is much more choice of bars and clubs in Lindos, or for a change you could choose to while away the evening at one of the bars in sleepy Lardos, 6km away, but if you want wild night life and don't mind how far you travel to find it, Faliraki is about 40km away.
There are a handful of tourist shops in Kalathos, but most visitors take the bus or short taxi ride to Lindos for an extensive array of crafts, gifts and souvenirs.
Kalathos is only about half way down the eastern side of Rhodes, but is one of the most southerly resorts on the island. It makes for a great day out to hire a car and drive further south, exploring the remote villages and unspoilt beaches that spread along the Mediterranean coast.
