Guide to Achladies Bay

'Let your cares waft away in this incredibly beautiful taverna-lined bay, dipping into Skiathos Town whenever the mood takes you.'

A jewel of a bay on eastern Skiathos, Achladies Bay will seduce you into a mood of pure relaxation in no time. The loveliness of the scenery is the first thing to strike you. The dazzling blue bay. Bottle green woodland. And golden belt of sand. Gorgeous. The days slip by uncounted here. So put away your diary and your mobile phone and enjoy the constant Greek sun between cooling dips in the crystalline waters. And when you feel a burst of energy coming on, take your pick of the range of watersports on offer and go for it on the waves. Or saunter to your favourite seaside taverna for a lunch of sizzling souvlaki and fresh, feta-topped salad. When you're up for getting out and about, hop on a cruiseboat to the uninhabited island of Tsougria or the miniaturised Greek postcard that is Skopelos – both beckon to you from the beach. Land-lubbers will be lured by the little footpaths leading into the shady olive groves and fruit orchards inland. And as night falls, retrace your steps for an equally enjoyable supper gazing out to sea. There's no arguing over where to spend your nights out. Skiathos Town, a short cab or bus ride to the north, wins every time. Here you'll discover endless tavernas, discos and bars, and behind the waterfront, a treasure trove of interesting shops selling the island's speciality pottery and jewellery.

Skiathos Town offers souvlaki kiosks (Souvlaki is the hamburger of Greece, it's made of a meat, such as beef, lamb or pork that is cooked on a rotisserie and then put into pita bread with lettuce, tomato, onions and sadziki - a cucumber-yogurt-garlic sauce), ouzerias, traditional tavernas, fish restaurants and upmarket Greek, French and Italian restaurants. If you would prefer to eat in the resort, grilled fish, salad and sandwiches are the staple in the charming beachside tavernas.
