The coastal village of Aghia Paraskevi may be small, but over the years it's steadily grown into a popular tourist spot. With just a clutch of traditional tavernas and a church to its name, it really is small and friendly. But it's the beach that draws the crowds. If you've come here seeking a deserted, Robinson Crusoe kind of stretch, you're in the wrong place. Because in southern Skiathos, the beaches are more holiday playground than private paradise. Aghia Paraskevi beach – or Platanias as it's also known - is a long stretch of golden sand where watersports like jet-skiing, paragliding and snorkelling take centre-stage. It's also the place to come if you want to explore a bit of the island. Take a cruise to the magical Lalaria beach, it's a white pebble beach surrounded by pure white cliffs. Or check out the Medieval town of Kastro. Built atop a cliff that juts out to the sea at the north end of Skiathos, it was once the island's biggest Medieval town, with 22 churches and 300 houses. Now there's only one church that remains and the ruins of a few others. Skiathos Town itself should also be on your must-see list. Hop on a bus or water taxi and make your way to the island's capital. Crammed with boutiques and galleries, craft shops and souvenir stalls, there's plenty here to keep you busy. What's more, it's got some pretty waterfront tavernas perfect for yacht-spotting. And when the sun goes down, this place gets into party mode. There are countless bars and music spots that light up after dark. Or for something a little more relaxing, there's always Platanias village. Here you'll find a handful of family-run tavernas where you can dine on deep-fried kalamari and the island's speciality – sweet walnut pie.
