'The most famous beach in Skiathos, Koukounaries is heaven on earth if you're looking for serious sun and sand-lounging.'
Close your eyes and imagine. You're lying on warm sand that feels satiny-soft on your skin. The only sound pricking the outer edges of your consciousness is the gentle brush of waves inches from your toes. And in the air, the slightest thread of oh-so-sweet pine scent mingles with the white heat of the Greek sun. Where are you? Koukounaries in Skiathos, one of the finest beaches in all the Greek islands. Lying on the island's south western tip, this kilometre of white sand is the mother of all beaches. Unwinding itself along a horseshoe bay between fragrant, thick pine groves – Koukounaries means pine cone in Greek - and sparkling blue waters, it's the most photographed and popular beach on Skiathos. So don't expect to have it to yourself – beauty this good has to be shared out. But actually, that has its pluses. Koukounaries' popularity means you'll have your pick of its excellent facilities. You'll easily find a sunbed and sunshade in the rows available. You'll be free to get your thrills on the water with plenty of watersports. And behind the sands, you'll find cheery beach cafes supplying endless stocks of ice-cold drinks and refreshments. When you're feeling peckish, the resort's clutch of tavernas and international-style eateries will oblige for a delicious, in between-beach-sessions lunch. And while you're here, potter around the handful of shops, selling colourful souvenirs and beach paraphernalia. Weary of the sands? Grab a bus to Skiathos Town, the island's stylish capital to amble around its craft shops, jewellers and waterfront bars. Or head into the cooler, pine-carpeted hills around Koukounaries to enjoy the delights of the lush interior.

This recipe has spread all over the world but always tastes best in the country it originated from.
