'Close to Skiathos Town yet with its own lovely beach, tavernas and shops, Megali Ammos gives you all the choices you could want.'
Like the idea of being near, but not right, slap bang in the heart of Skiathos Town? About a kilometre south of the sociable capital, Megali Ammos has all the ingredients for that quintessential Greek island holiday – a good beach, iridescent seas and some welcoming tavernas and shops. Yet it also throws one great extra into the mix – the fact that Skiathos Town is right on your doorstep. First off though, pretty Megali Ammos' beach is definitely worth a good few hours of your day. A kilometre stretch of pebbles and sand fringed by shallow waters, a stroll along it brings you to pockets of sunbeds and watersports, as well as quieter areas cooled by the shade of bordering pine trees. Walk on and friendly tavernas come into view, one by one, all ideal excuses for a refreshing beer out of the midday sun. Great though all this sounds, it's just a matter of time before the attractions of Skiathos Town muscle in. For starters, it's the departure point for some fabulous days out. By day, boats chug from its harbour on round-the-island cruises or to the island gems of Skopelos or Tsougria. If you're into beaches, hop on one to the spectacular cove and caves at Lalaria just around the coast. Otherwise spend the day and evening immersing yourself in this upbeat town. Saunter through its stone-paved streets where you'll find smart antique and gift shops interlaced with traditional tavernas. Later, as dusk settles, enjoy a metaxa at a buzzing restaurant before heading, energies restored, onto a club, or tired out, back to that welcome pillow in Megali Ammos.
