'The name says it all. A straight translation from the Greek 'Cryssi Ammoudia', the long and luxurious 'golden sands' are probably the best on the island.'
Climbing pine forested hillsides at the northern end of a big, broad bay, the village of Golden Beach exists for one reason only. And that's the fabulous buttermilk sands from which it takes its name – there's not much else here. You've got a cluster of tavernas and little bars are set back from the beach, punctuating the main road through the village. There's a mini market for fridge fillers and sun-cream supplies – but if you want to shop in earnest, you'll have to take a water-taxi to nearby Thassos Town. And that's about it. No buzzing nightlife. No famous fast-food outlets. But then, that's what Golden Beach is all about. It's a dyed-in-the-wool sun, sea and sand haven. And while it's a world away from the holiday hordes, it's not lacking on things to do. There's a full menu of watersports with everything from pedalos and sailing to paragliding and windsurfing. So you can hone your high-speed skills or just potter about – whichever floats your boat. And if you want to see some of the island's archaeological sites, there are ample examples just round the headland in the capital town. Bliss for beach lovers.

Hire a car and visit the Monastery of Panagouda which was built to honour the Virgin Mary. According to local myth, an icon of the virgin escaped from a small chapel that was being plundered by pirates and was later discovered hanging from a tree.
