Guide to Potos

'A kilometre sweep of sand. Beautifully blue sea. And a village clustered tightly round a harbour. Small wonder that Potos is so popular.'

Within easy reach of livelier Limenaria, and about a fifteen minute stroll from peaceful Pefkari, Potos is the perfect in-between place with a middle of the road pace. The village itself is as compact as the beach is big and broad. Speaking of the beach, this one's something special. The best stretch on the bay, it's got everything from watersports to waterfront tavernas. Lining the harbour there's a string of bars and cafes, some stylish and trendy, others cheap and cheerful – but all perfect for that al fresco feast. And clustered behind, in a maze of small streets and even smaller alleyways, you'll find stacks of souvenir shops and many a mini market. There are also various rental offices, so you can plan for local and island exploration … and pick your transport from mountain bikes to mopeds or family motors. Evening-wise, Potos is fairly low key – drinks in a bar at the sunset, dinner in a favourite taverna, then on to a cafe for pastries or ice cream. But, if you want to up the tempo, a quick taxi ride would bring you to Limenaria's music bars. Everything in moderation.

Beaches

The beach at Potos is an arching 2km swathe of fine sand starting at the centre of the village. It is clean and bathing is good for children. There are also many watersports on offer. It is a short walk to the neighbouring village of Pefkari which also boasts a pretty beach, surrounded by pine trees. Watersports are available there too.

Eating out

There are a number of tavernas serving traditional greek cuisine and fresh fish specialities, as well as pizzerias and restaurants offering international dishes. These are largely situated along the beachfront.

Nightlife

There are plenty of bars in which to while the night away, but if you yearn for a livelier scene, visit the larger resort of Limenaria further up the coast, where there are more clubs and bars.

Shopping

The choice of shops is somewhat limited in Potos, although souvenirs and the basics are available. Try Limenaria for more variety and a day out.

Local information

Potos was originally the fishing port of the medieval capital of Theologos. It is accessible today by bus, taxi or hire car and is well worth a visit for a day of history, away from the beach. You will feel as if you are stepping back in time when in Theologos, surrounded by medieval Greek buildings and Turkish and Egyptian monuments. Visit the old church with its resplendent icons, then sample the dishes in one of the local tavernas, where you will probably catch some Greek music and dancing.
