"With bags of bars around the town, picturesque port-side tavernas, a busy beach, plenty of shops … and ruins of the ancient town thrown in for good measure, the island's capital aims to keep everyone happy."
A modern town spreads out behind an old and pretty fishing port, filling the gap between the sea and the ancient acropolis. All eras of Thassos life are here. Classical relics include temples, shrines, an amphitheatre and part of the Roman road. A medieval fortress led the way in architectural reclaim – utilising stones from fallen ruins. Old-world atmosphere focuses on the fishing harbour, while contemporary town streets are home to up-tempo bars and clubs. And there are cafe bars – and superb ice-cream – around the church square. The golden sand beach, close to the harbour, is a lively and popular place, with pine trees for shade and tavernas for sustenance. And on the outskirts of town, Varthy is one of a sprinkling of quieter bays and coves. Known locally (and signposted) as Limin or Limenas, Thassos Town is also the island's best place for shopping with plenty of places to purchase the local specialities... white marble, honey, repro icons and spoil-yourself jewellery. All you need is here, including opportunities to explore the rest of the island.

There's a small, clean beach with golden sand near the harbour. It's framed by tall pine-trees which offer some shade from the hot Thassos sun. There are more beaches on the outskirts of town - a particular favourite is Varthy beach which is quieter than some of the others.
Thassos Town has the best selection of restaurants on the island. Many of them offer al fresco dining in beautiful settings, so if you like your meal to be accompanied by the sight of the sun setting over the majestic Aegean sea, head for one of these.
The seafront is always lively in the evenings, and has a great selection of restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Don't miss the beach bars, where you can enjoy international music, locally produced alcohol, and the feel of sand between your toes as you dance the night away. Things can get hectic in July and August and you may hear noise from your accommodation.
The greatest concentration of shops is around the ferry port on the seafront. Here you'll find everything you could want, from souvenirs to slippers. Don't leave Thassos without purchasing some local produce, especially the delicious thyme-infused honey.
The ancient city of Thassos Town dates back to the seventh century BC, when it was famed for gold and marble. City walls, the acropolis, and even a theatre are amongst the ruins that are still visible today. If you're feeling energetic enough, climb to the summit of Mount Ipsarion for views to take your breath away, although be aware that this is a strenuous hike.
