If you're somewhere with a traditional village ambience, but also want to be close to all the action - Tias is right up your holiday street. Just a few miles inland from Puerto Del Carmen, Lanzarote's liveliest resort, this typically Canarian village is the perfect spot to soak up the Canarian culture in a friendly tapas bar or chat with locals in a cafe. Within minutes you can also be on the beach, with a choice of Puerto Del Carmen's own stretch of silky-soft sands or the secluded shores of Papagayo. As for history, Tias has a long and interesting heritage, part of which is the unusual story of how it got its name. Meaning 'aunts', it was inspired by the favourite relations of Don Alonso Fajardo, a former governor of Gran Canaria, the province to which Lanzarote belongs, who was carrying out a census in 1493 and needed something to call the village. Unfortunately, while there's plenty written about Tias' past, few buildings survive. Check out the charming 16th century church of Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria, which houses a painting of the Virgin from the same period, and the pretty little San Antonio Chapel. However, the island's capital, Arrecife is just a short bus ride away and has plenty to satisfy keen sightseers, including some quaint old white-washed fisherman's houses and the Castle of San Jose, which houses a modern art gallery. What's more, if you're looking for scenic splendour, you can head straight across the island to the Timanfaya National Park, populated by volcanoes, lunar-like landscapes and eerie rock formations.
