Guide to Costa De Los Pinos

'A small, friendly resort, Costa de los Pinos offers relaxation, relaxation, relaxation.'

As its name suggests, Costa de los Pinos is set in picturesque parkland amongst fragrant pine trees. It's a quiet spot which offers a relaxed atmosphere, yet easy access to the larger resorts of Cala Bona and Cala Millor. Costa de los Pinos has a pleasant shingle beach backed up by a few bars. And if you're prepared to get out and about, you'll find that Majorca's east coast has plenty of other fine stretches of sand, ranging from lively with watersports to tranquil and secluded. The local restaurants are good value and offer a reasonable range of traditional and cosmopolitan fare. And if you like to take your tastebuds on a culinary adventure, it's not far to Cala Bona for fresh seafood, Chinese and Italian. Days in Costa de los Pinos mainly revolve around sunbathing and swimming or relaxing in a beachside bar with a cooling glass of cerveza and a plate of olives. However, hire a car and the beautiful, rugged scenery of the inland countryside is at your service. Visit the historic town of Arta, home to the beautiful 14th century Sanctuary of San Salvador, overlooking the village and the ruins of a Bronze Age settlement, the oldest on the island. Alternatively, take a trip in a glass bottomed boat and see the shoals of fish and other sea life going about their business in the crystal clear waters.

Exploring inland will take you away from the crowds and into pine clad hills that make for great walking country. If you hire a car you'll be able to skirt the coastline, stopping off at beaches as you go. You may be lucky enough to find a secluded cove all to yourself. Just a short drive inland and you will come to the historic town of Arta which is dominated by a 14th-century hilltop fortress, Esglesia de San Salvador. From this vantage point you can view the surrounding countryside and, on a clear day, out to sea. 10km southeast of Arta are the Coves d'Arta that can be toured throughout the year.

Beaches

The golden sands of Costa de los Pinos beach are wonderful for children, as are the warm waters of the Mediterranean that lie calmly offshore. If you want to explore the coast you will be spoilt for choice as sandy coves and rocky inlets are scattered around this part of the island. For the larger beach experience with all the facilities of a large tourist resort, head to Cala Millor, part of the largest bay on this coast. Porto Cristo is a charming town with a small village and the famous Coves del Drac.

Eating out

Food and drink plays a huge part in Majorcan life and taking time to enjoy it really makes a holiday special. There's no better way to relax than a long lunch followed by a siesta on the beach or by the pool. Seafood takes precedence here and is always a good choice. Costa de los Pinos has a few restaurants but most dining is done in the hotels.

Nightlife

The nightlife here is low key, focusing on evening strolls and good food. If you fancy a night on the Majorcan tiles, Cala Millor has more to offer in the way of modern discos and bars

Shopping

Shopping at Costa de los Pinos is limited to the essentials: life tends to move slowly here and you'll be more interested in beach and pool time than in bargains. Arta caters a little better for the tourist with numerous local shops selling local produce and goods. The industrial town of Manacor, about 25km away, specialises in manufactured pearls.

Local information

Beach life is what Majorca is famed for; however there is plenty on offer inland. The caves at Porto Cristo and Arta will give you a claustrophobic thrill and make for good days out. Arta town is a good place to recover from your caving experience with a cold drink in the medieval square.
